Movies are amazing. I don’t know about you, but they’re among the few activities in life where I can really lose myself. Fiction books too, to a somewhat lesser extent. And songs, although it sort of breaks the mood when they end after a few minutes.
Movies can change your life, and some quotes stick with you for decades. Of course, there are iconic lines like “Bond. James Bond,” Dirty Harry’s “Go ahead, make my day” and “I’ll have what she’s having,” from When Harry Met Sally.
When I was a kid, my big brother took me to see Love Story. Yes, I am that old. For the longest time, I bought Jennifer Cavalieri’s line that “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Uh huh. Tell that to my wife.
Some lines are so sticky that I still find myself reciting them, after all these years. Some challenge the status quo, or my comfort zone. Others are strangely true and relatable, even completely out of context. A few are so thought provoking, I’m still not sure if they make any sense. Here are some that have really resonated with me:
“I haven’t met many happy people in my life. How do they act?” – Chloe, The Big Chill
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
“Sometimes you gotta say ‘What the fuck,’ make your move.” – Miles, Risky Business
“The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars
“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” – Rick, Casablanca
“Never tell me the odds.” – Han Solo, The Empire Strikes Back
“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” – Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz
“There’s a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.” – Ty Webb, Caddy Shack
“Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.” – Gordon Gekko, Wall Street
“It’s not the years, honey, it’s the mileage.” – Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark
“Stupid is as stupid does.” – Forrest, Forrest Gump
And this sort of confession from, well, I’m not going to give it away, always gets me thinking:
P.S. You get bonus points for naming the movies that the highlighted quotes come from (no Google search cheating, now).
